Glacial Lake Missoula, permanent exhibit: During the last ice age, an advancing glacier blocked the passage of the Clark Fork River, creating an ice dam and the colossal but temporary Glacial Lake Missoula. Over time, the ice weathered and the dam catastrophically failed, releasing the entire contents of the lake in a matter of hours. Resulting scars on the landscape are still evident today. This exhibit chronicles the formation of the lake, its purported multiple floods, and the history of the modern discovery of these phenomena.
In creating this exhibit, I researched primary geological texts, popular literature, and scoured a multigenerational family archive of the geologist who first described Glacial Lake Missoula. Although I worked with a team throughout, I led all aspects of this project, including concept development, research and writing, and design and layout of interpretive materials (even putting the final brushstrokes of paint on the accompanying mural!).
